Signs Depression May Be Interfering With Your Life
Having less interest in activities, relationships, or goals that once mattered to you
Feeling sad, numb, empty, irritable, or emotionally disconnected
Struggling to begin or complete everyday tasks
Feeling tired or depleted even when you have had time to rest
Withdrawing from friends, family, classmates, or coworkers
Criticizing yourself harshly or feeling that you are disappointing others
Having difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering things
Sleeping much more or less than usual
Falling behind on responsibilities because everything feels harder to manage
Appearing capable or successful while privately feeling discouraged and stuck
Depression can affect how you think, feel, connect with others, and manage everyday responsibilities. It does not always look like constant sadness; it can also appear as numbness, irritability, withdrawal, low motivation, or feeling unlike yourself. You do not need to experience every symptom—or have a formal diagnosis—to benefit from therapy.
Depression Can Impact Every Stage of Life
Dayna works with college students, young adults, and adults experiencing depression:
College Students
Depression in college may look like missing classes, falling behind academically, withdrawing from friends, sleeping at unusual times, or losing interest in campus life. A student may feel ashamed that college does not look or feel the way they expected—even while appearing fine to family and friends.
Young Adults
Young adulthood can bring uncertainty about work, relationships, identity, finances, and the future. Depression may make it harder to take the next step, maintain routines, connect with other people, or feel hopeful about where life is heading.
Adult Men
Men experiencing depression do not always describe themselves as sad. They may feel irritable, disconnected, exhausted, unmotivated, or increasingly frustrated with work and relationships. Some keep pushing themselves while privately feeling that little brings satisfaction or meaning.
Adults Navigating Change
Loss, health concerns, caregiving responsibilities, relationship changes, career transitions, or a growing sense of disconnection can contribute to depression at any age. Therapy can provide space to understand what has changed and consider practical ways to move forward.
How Depression Therapy Can Help
Depression can impact your energy, motivation, relationships, routines, and sense of possibility. It may show up as sadness, numbness, irritability, withdrawal, procrastination, harsh self-criticism, or difficulty enjoying things that once mattered. Some people continue meeting their responsibilities while privately feeling disconnected or depleted.
Our work may include:
Identifying situations and thought patterns that trigger depressing feelings and figuring out realistic ways forward
Working on responding differently to negative thoughts
Rebuilding helpful routines
Addressing avoidance
Improving relationships
Breaking larger problems into manageable steps
The goal is not to force positivity or expect you to change everything at once. It’s to help you feel understood, develop useful ways to cope, and gradually reconnect with your life.
How & Where We Can Meet
Dayna offers in-person, depression therapy at my office at 316 Broad Street in Red Bank, New Jersey, as well as secure online therapy for clients located throughout New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Florida.
In-person therapy may be especially convenient if you live, attend school, or work in Red Bank or the surrounding Monmouth County area. Online therapy can be a helpful option when travel, school, work, or family responsibilities make getting to the office difficult — or if you are in one of the states above where I am licensed.
Ongoing Sessions are typically 45 minutes and cost $165. I don’t participate directly with insurance plans, but I can provide a superbill that you may submit for possible out-of-network behavioral health benefits. Coverage varies, so it’s helpful to ask your insurance company about your out-of-network benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions About Depression Therapy
Do I need to be diagnosed with depression before beginning therapy?
No. You do not need a formal diagnosis to seek therapy. You may simply know that you feel disconnected, discouraged, unmotivated, or unlike yourself. We can begin by talking about what you have been experiencing and how it is affecting your life.
Can therapy help if I am still functioning at work or school?
Yes. Many people continue meeting their responsibilities while privately struggling with low motivation, isolation, exhaustion, or a loss of enjoyment. You should not wait until things become unmanageable before asking for support.
What happens in depression therapy?
We will work to understand what may be contributing to how you feel and identify practical, manageable steps forward. Therapy may include examining unhelpful thought patterns, rebuilding routines, addressing avoidance, improving relationships, and reconnecting with activities or values that matter to you.
What therapeutic approaches do you use?
Depending on your needs, I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, solution-focused therapy, and supportive therapy. My approach is collaborative and practical, while also giving you space to feel understood.
How often would we meet?
Many clients begin with weekly sessions so that we can build momentum and understand what support will be most helpful. The appropriate frequency depends on your needs, circumstances, and progress, and we can discuss that together.
Do you offer in-person and online depression therapy?
Yes. I offer in-person therapy in Red Bank, New Jersey, and secure telehealth for clients located in New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Florida.
How do I get started?
You can schedule a free 15-minute consultation to briefly discuss what brings you to therapy, ask questions, and consider whether working together may be a good fit.
What Working With Dayna Stein Is Like:
I’m Dayna Stein, MST, MSW, LCSW. I am a licensed clinical social worker and former middle and high school teacher. I work with college students, young adults, and adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationships, and major life transitions.
My approach is warm, practical, and collaborative. I will listen carefully, but therapy with me involves more than listening. I may ask questions that help you see a situation differently, point out patterns you may not have noticed, and teach strategies you can use outside our sessions.
Depending on your needs, I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance-based approaches, mindfulness, and solution-focused therapy. We will decide together what feels most useful and appropriate for you.
You will not be expected to share everything immediately. We can begin with what is troubling you now, how it’s affecting your life, and what you would like to be different.
