Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a type of talk therapy which has been researched as being best practice for treating trauma specifically, but not limited to, those ages 3 -21. Dayna is a Red Bank, NJ therapist certified in TF-CBT.
What is trauma? Trauma is an experience that is threatening or scary that causes acute or prolonged distress. Common traumas include: being a survivor of sexual/physical/emotional abuse, witnessing violence, divorce, loss of a loved one, or accidents. Survivors of trauma might feel fearful, ashamed, angry, guilty, shocked, or vulnerable. Many people over time shake these negative feelings without professional help. However, others have a much harder time bouncing back without professional help. Recovery from trauma tends to be more difficult if it is repeated, or if happens in childhood. TF-CBT aims to resolve or minimize all of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress such as negative mood, a heightened sense of threat or vigilance, avoidance of reminders, and re-experiencing memories of the trauma.
What will TF-CBT sessions look like? CBT is when a therapist and client work together to build rapport and trust. When clients are minors, it involves the child and family. Components include: Psychoeducation - Learn about trauma, reactions, reminders, and treatment Parenting - Pick up strategies to address common behavior problems Relaxation - Learn Focused Breathing, Mindfulness, Stress Management Feelings - Learn about feelings and ways to express them Beliefs - Make sense of what you thought at the time of the trauma, and deciding what is a fair way to think about yourself and your situation now. Memories - Process your trauma narrative gradually by describing thoughts, feelings, sensations, helpful and worst moments. Revise any distorted thinking and end with positive lessons about yourself, others, and your future. Reclaiming One's Life - Address personal safety skills and assertive communication; increase awareness of problem solving skills and/or social skills; gain sex education knowledge when appropriate.
The goal is to help you take back the things that you used to enjoy and/or build a new life that you can value.
