My name is Lawrence Stein, and I'm a Licensed Psychologist in Red Bank, New Jersey. I bring my own unique combination of professional training, personal skills, and life experience to doing neuropsychological and psychological evaluations.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, received my BS in Psychology from University of Alabama, followed up with a MA in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Illinois University, and earned a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Oklahoma State University. For almost 20 years, I've been in private practice, and I'm on staff at Hackensack Meridian Riverview Medical Center, both in Red Bank, NJ.
I'm a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist. A lot of people ask me what the difference between the two is. Well, a clinical psychologist is someone who can assess, diagnose, and treat psychological and mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and so on.
On the other hand, a neuropsychologist is an expert who can assess, diagnose, and treat psychological disorders associated with brain-based conditions. For example, I can assess the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional deficits resulting from a brain injury, stroke, dementia, or a pattern of cognitive strengths and weaknesses in someone with a learning disorder, ADHD, or a disorder on the autism spectrum. I use a series of tests to assess various areas of cognition and behavior, such as memory, attention, learning processing speed, and abstract reasoning. This information is connected to brain structures and examine the impact of any identified areas of difficulty in a person's daily functioning.
Also, I help patients prepare for bariatric surgery and spinal stimulator implants. These patients are generally referred to me by their surgeon. Why do some medical doctors require a psychological evaluation before surgery? Because psychosocial factors have a significant impact on the long-term outcomes of certain types of surgeries, including the likelihood a patient will be able to stick to the recommended post-operative lifestyle regimens, emotional adjustment, and weight loss outcomes (if applicable).
When I am not working or spending time with my family, I like long-distance running and playing guitar. Feel free to reach out for your free 15 minute consultation to see if my services are right for you.
