What Is Trauma-Informed Care (and Why It Matters)?
If you’ve ever felt like your past experiences are still affecting how you move through life—or you’re just trying to make sense of overwhelming emotions—you’re not alone. And you’re not broken.
One of the most compassionate ways we can approach healing is through something called trauma-informed care. It's not a buzzword or a trend—it's a mindset and a framework that helps therapists like us support clients in a way that’s safe, empowering, and deeply respectful of what they’ve been through.
A Different Way to Ask the Question
Traditional mental health care sometimes starts with the question, “What’s wrong with you?” Trauma-informed care changes that to “What happened to you?”—and then takes it one step further to “What’s strong with you?”
This approach recognizes that trauma can show up in many different ways, and that healing begins with understanding, not judgment.
So, What Is Trauma-Informed Care?
At its core, trauma-informed care (or TIC) is about creating an environment that feels safe—emotionally, physically, and psychologically—for everyone involved. It’s about being mindful of how trauma affects people and making sure that the way we provide care doesn’t accidentally re-trigger old wounds.
Whether we’re talking about therapy sessions, the language we use, or how we structure a treatment plan, trauma-informed care asks: “How can we support healing here?”
The Guiding Principles of Trauma-Informed Care
Here’s what this approach looks like in practice:
Understand that trauma is more common than we think – You never know what someone has been through. TIC starts by assuming that trauma could be part of the story.
Recognize the signs – Trauma can show up as anxiety, anger, avoidance, trouble sleeping—you name it. Being aware of these signs helps us respond with care.
Respond with intention – We make sure our office practices, communication, and therapy approaches are all designed to support—not overwhelm—you.
Avoid re-traumatizing – The goal is to help you heal, not reopen old wounds. We work hard to create a calm, predictable, and empowering space.
TIC is also built on five really important values:
Safety – You deserve to feel safe in every interaction.
Trust – We build this together, through honesty and consistency.
Choice – You’re in control of your care. You always have options.
Collaboration – We’re partners in this. You’re the expert on your own life.
Empowerment – We’ll focus on your strengths and help you build confidence from the inside out.
Why It Makes a Big Difference
When care is trauma-informed, people tend to feel more connected, more understood, and more open to the healing process. Some of the benefits include:
Feeling more comfortable and engaged in therapy
Better emotional and physical health outcomes
Fewer chances of being re-triggered
A more positive relationship between client and therapist
And better, more effective care overall
A NOTE FROM ME:
We believe that healing is possible for everyone, and it starts with being seen and supported for who you are, not just what you’ve been through.
As a therapist who specializes in trauma-informed care, I’m here to help create a space where you can feel safe, grounded, and empowered. Whether you're just starting therapy or returning to it after a break, my goal is to walk alongside you—not ahead or behind you—as you move forward.
